What is Neurofeedback?

It is a non-invasive computer-assisted method of learning. Sensors are placed on the head and trainees learn to modify to their own brainmetabolism. We use statistics to identify brain regions that reflect clinical symptoms or cognitive deficits. Trainees receive auditoryand/orvisual reinforcement each time brain waves display a healthier pattern. Neurofeedback is biofeedback for the brain, it is a form of operantconditioning and self-regulation is the key. Changes to brain metabolism are usually maintained after training stops. Disorders such as depression, anxiety, LDs, OCD, ADHD, cognitive decline and ASDs often show a discreet brain wave pattern that can be seen in brain maps-yes neurofeedback providers do brain imaging. We show our clients how their brain reflects their symptoms and offer them a targeted approach to make positive changes toward mental and cognitive health. If you are thinking about adding neurofeedback to your practice you may wish to read: Getting Started with EEG Neurofeedback, 2nd ed., WW Norton.
